That's my home!

That's my home!

My big news is a little anti climatic since I have already announced it, but…... My home is in Kansas City Spaces magazine!!!  It's an early Christmas present!  I have admired this magazine for years.  I carefully read the content.  I admire the pictures. And now I'm in it!  It was a goal of mine to be published in this magazine and here it is.  A little surreal.

So here's the full line of events.  I tracked down Zim Loy, editor of Spaces.  And by track down I mean I called in lots of favors.  Vince has good friends, Bernie and Scott, who know Merrily Jackson.  The one and only Merrily Jackson.  The writer of the entertainment section.  She of course knows Zim.  So Bernie asked Merrily if she could give me her email address.  Merrily graciously read my email, with pictures, and contacted me with the nicest note letting me know she would pass my information onto Zim.  It was clear Merrily not only writes about etiquette but also lives it.  Her response alone made me jump with joy.  Then a few days later Zim Loy emailed me!!!!  She wanted to see my house and some of my work.  Joy... then panic!   I started finishing the last minute projects I had put off.  I emailed Zim again to try and prompt her to come out to the very southern side of Kansas City.

She agreed!  I don't get too nervous about my work anymore.  I'm pretty confident in my ability, so there aren't a lot of situations that make my heart really race, but the day Zim came out had me in whirlwind.  For those of you that know me well, you know I talk fast normally, so add some nerves to the day and I'm sure I talked faster than what was comprehendible, but she was gracious.  We did a walk through of my home and then off to a  client for a look at their amazing kitchen, which I hope to be reporting about in a future Spaces magazine.

I clearly don't know Zim well but I get the feeling she doesn't sugar coat too much.  She appears to have a business mind that is no nonsense, but I also know she is beyond creative, so I hung on her every word.  Before she came out, Vince had reminded me that I had nothing to prove and that my worth wasn't tied up in what she thought of me.  Encouraging words just in case.  But it worked out.  So, I'm going with, Zim's approval validated my work, and of course she knows all  :)

So next steps were that they would be in contact with me for a magazine in 2015.  I was on cloud nine and then it became clear it was a waiting game and I prayed everything stayed on track.  Then on an unusually tough week for Noble Designs, Zim emailed they were ready to come out and photograph.  It was the perk I needed to back down off the plank.

We scheduled for Halloween which meant all the decorations had to come down.  We actually had a party that night, with no decorations :)  Flowers were delivered that morning.  Randy Neal made 3 amazing bouquets that were set out in the house.  The florist delivery guy was very complimentary of the home which made me smile.  Next the photographer, Aaron Leimkuehler came and got a tour.  He was easy to have and took a quick tour.  Then Zim showed up and they were off.  I'm not sure they wanted me following them around but I couldn't help myself.  I could hang on all their words and I found it all fascinating.  It was clear early that this wasn't their first rodeo.  They worked together like an old married couple.  She gave direction, he did his magic, they plugged into the computer, took a quick look and then onto the next shot.

I would say it took about 2 hours and I was on a high!  Then as if it kept getting better they were doing the shoot for the upcoming edition that would be published 1 month later.  One of my best friends had gotten me a subscription to Spaces months ago, so now I just had to wait for my copy.

I was good for awhile.  Then Dec 1st hit, and it was a little after midnight, when I decided to take a quick look at their on-line site, and there was the new edition!  Vince convinced me to wait to see it in print.  I had been wanting to be in print for years and it would be more meaningful to hold the magazine in my hands and see it.  I hesitantly agreed and went to bed.  Where I then had a nightmare that a high school intern at Spaces took my layout home and failed to bring it back in time to get it to print.  It felt real :)  So the next day I hit my emails after the long holiday.  Krista checked in via text to report that our local Price Chopper, HyVee and Hen House didn't have it yet.  HyVee said the magazine guy is there between 8 -9.  So to show I had will power, I waited until 9:30.  Where then I hit all the same places and added Walmart and a call to Barnes Noble.

Just my luck the snow storm in New York slowed down distribution.  I'm not sure if that's true but it sounded good.  So after some wasted time we got on-line.  It was perfect!  I'm so excited.  The article was well written and just perfect!  The pictures were perfect.  It's weird to see your own home but thrilling!  So I calmed down a little.  Vince took me out to celebrate with a happy hour at the Bristol.  We were having a fantastic night.  Then off to Nordstrom for a quick return but as we drove there he started to feel ill.  He pulled over to have me drive  He breathed heavily in the car and I drove fast to make sure he made it home in time.  I'm not going to lie I was disappointed that this was how our night was going to end.  I went running inside to get him a glass of water after reprimanding him for leaving the Christmas tree lights on while we were gone.  I walked into an intimate surprise party for me!

I'm rarely surprised but I had no idea.  My parents, the Wheelers, Vince's family and everyone from Noble Designs; Rachel, Kim and Jessica where there with champagne.  My mom got my favorite pink champagne cake from 3 Women and an Oven.  A treat sweet enough to make the normal faint but a perfect treat for this sugar addict.  Vince had my favorite treats of cotton candy jelly beans and pink sixlet candies.  Then, because no Cook party is without balloons, he got balloons as close to Noble Design colors as possible.  It was a perfect night.  I have a lot of people to thank for supporting Noble Designs but some of the biggest playmakers were there raising a glass for me.

So now I just obsess about the hardcopy about once a day.  Krista's friend got her's in the mail and sent it to volleyball practice to give to Ellie Wheeler.  They then delivered it to me last night.  Bernie got her copy today.  Surely mine comes tomorrow.  But I do have a hard copy in hand.  I may have teared up when I read the editor's note.  Zim writes about MY house!  It's too exciting.

The edition is full of fantastic articles.  A local Olathe couple won a nation wide contest to get Nate Berkus to renovate their kitchen.   It's fun.  The other home featured is beautiful as well.  The information is good as always and the restaurant I have been talking about trying is featured right after my article.  It's perfect.  So I expect it to be on stands this week, early next week at the latest so be sure and pick up your copy.  The entire edition won't disappoint.  Or check it out at www.spaceskc.com. So now back to work but I'm back with a little bigger smile this week :)
